Qualitative research

How design thinking could benefit my work in policy research.

What I bring

50% Detailed visualizer | 50% Systems-thinking

Capturing the user’s

lived experiences

My design process prioritizes inclusivity. Through my previous work on empowering marginalized communities, I am attuned to listening and identifying where people aren't being heard and what solutions they need.

Distilling complex research & processes

As a qualitative researcher, I've always embraced complexity and can delve into messy problems. I break down intricate processes, uncovering the root issues and capturing the nuances between different stakeholder needs. Through thoughtful analysis, I transform these insights into clear, actionable design solutions.

A systems-

thinking approach

Systems-thinking and a drive for positive impact has always guided my work. I focus on user psychology and behaviour beyond the digital touchpoint. By understanding the broader ecosystem, I’m able to identify real risks, benefits, and opportunities — designing solutions that balance user needs with business goals and long-term impact.

Leading through uncertainty

My time in the NGO and start up space has given me the skill to navigate uncertainty and manage diverse stakeholder needs. From facilitating focus groups, to presenting my research as a panelist, I am able to take ownership of my work, and be adaptable to dynamic and unstructured environments.

A bit about me

I love solving problems for people. This is what originally led me to the environmental policy field as a qualitative researcher, and now to user experience design. I have always sought to address challenges, whether societal or individual, whether small or complex — with a focus on creating meaningful impact.

While at Nature Canada, I worked on a project to define urban tree equity. After interviewing key informants in the urban environmental space, I conducted a thematic analysis — what I later recognized as affinity mapping. I used direct interview quotes to capture and tell the story of the communities affected — which in hindsight would make great user personas. As a policy researcher, I found that my work has always closely mirrored the role of a designer, placing human needs at the forefront, while visualizing and understanding the bigger picture and thoughtfully balancing stakeholder perspectives.

My interest in design thinking led me to explore new frameworks, which is how I discovered experience design. Whether analyzing policies or creating a user interface, one thing is clear: I am passionate about (re)designing, prototyping and testing strategies and systems for a more liveable future.

Living and working in Tkaronto, an area that has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Huron-Wendat for thousands of years. I come with respect for this land that I am on today, and for the people who have and do reside here.
